What is a CV and what is a resume?

No need to reinvent the wheel here: "A resume is a brief summary of your skills and experience over one or two pages, a CV is more detailed and can stretch well beyond two pages. The resume will be tailored to each position whereas the CV will stay put and any changes will be in the cover letter" (Undercover recruiter).

In my experience, CV's have been more common if you are applying for something like a teaching fellow/teaching assistant position or a research assistant position, while some grant applications might ask for a resume or a one page CV (this latter language to me seems to be code word for resume).

Harvard's career center has a useful guide for writing CVs, resumes and cover letters.
